Tue, 10 June 2008 There are 2 issues to report on. First, there have been intermittent database errors this evening resulting in this error message for users attempting to login to libsyn.com and to visitors to libsyn blog pages and rss feeds. The engineering team continues to monitor the servers closely and take necessary measures to prevent these errors from occurring again. Media delivery, stats tracking, ad serving, and libsynPRO where not affected by these database errors.
Second, there were some upgrades made today to the libsyn.com stats display system to improve compatibility with Firefox 3.0. This code change caused some temporary issues for some users loading their stats. There was no interruption in stats collection or processing during this time- only an unusually slow load time. Both issues have been resolved. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 12:10 AM Comments[2] |
Sat, 3 May 2008 We are investigating FTP upload issues reported this morning. Will update when there is more information
update: we are monitoring the FTP servers closely as they have been acting a little finicky all day. All is up and operational as of 8:30pm EST. FYI, web uploading has been fine throughout this and for most cases should be a suitable workaround for most cases if you should have trouble getting in through FTP. Tue, 19 February 2008 Over the past few weeks we've received a number of reports of users replacing existing files, but the new versions of those files never becoming available. We tracked down the root of this problem (related to a recent configuration change with our CDN provider) and got it fixed. Now, when you update an existing file, the new version should be available for download immediately, and the old version should no longer get served. Mon, 21 January 2008 From about 8:00 to 8:40pm on tonight, some requests for files in the network were not being redirected properly, and in some cases, the wrong file was delivered. We were able to fix the problem as soon as it came to our attention. We apologize for any trouble this may have caused you or your listeners. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 8:58 PM Comments[0] |
Wed, 14 November 2007 The ability to post new topics or reply to old posts has been down for a few days, we inadvertently broke something when installing our new anti-spam measures. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our users, but rest assured that the forums are back up and in working order, with all the new anti-spam features in place. We have also updated the blog pages with similar measures in an attempt to lessen the amount of spam users receive. Please email us at support@libsyn.com if you have any problems regarding these new changes. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 11:17 AM Comments[1] |
Sat, 6 October 2007 After several days of investing strange media playback behavior, we have discovered a bug in our content storage system. The details are still not completely solid for which files could be affected, but as of right now we believe it to be larger (100mb+) files potentially getting corrupted as we push media into our storage array. It is not every file.. the bug occurs intermittently making it very hard to pin down. There have been sporadic reports of archived files getting corrupted and today some reports of new media files not playing properly once downloaded.
This issue is being addressed and we are working to detect the incomplete files and replace the corrupted or cut-off files from backup. Depending on the media type, sometimes the result of this bug will be a file that is just cut-off, or in the case of certain video codecs, the movie not playing at all. Quicktime reports "invalid public atom was found in the movie" in some cases, however in iTunes the file just doesn't show up. While we are making a sweep of the terabytes of data we have stored, if you are experiencing "weird" issues like these please let us know immediately and we will investigate your issue specifically. Update 10/8: The issue, unfortunately, seems to have extended beyond large files. About 5% of the files in our archives have been cut-off. We believe this has resulted from a script which ran to repair the mime-types of these files. The mime-type problem was causing files to not "stream" or progressive play download. The "fix" seems to have done more damage then good. We are running some scripts now to recover as many of the files from backups as we can. Unfortunately there will likely be files which will need to be re-uploaded. We will contact the users directly who this pertains to via email. There have been extra validation checks put into place to ensure this will never happen again. Update 10/9: We have scoured through the backups that we do have for some of the media and have found about 50% of the potentiallycorrupted files. Users who have been affected will receive an email with a list of the files that we have detected a file size mismatch on. You will be asked to verify those files by downloading them and if they are cut-off or corrupted, please reupload those files at your earliest convenience. Once uploaded, they will be automatically pushed into the archives and you the storage will not be counted towards your monthly quota. Stay tuned for more updates to come. Tue, 2 October 2007 A problem was discovered earlier today that was causing some newly uploaded files to not appear in the media tab of the libsyn dashboard. This issue was limited to files with illegal characters or spaces in the filenames. We fixed all instances of this that we were able to identify. If do happen to have files that you uploaded not showing up, please let us. For future reference, we "clean up" filenames by replacing spaces with underscores, and removing characters which are not alphanumeric (a-z, 0-9), periods (.), hyphens (-), or underscores (_). Sat, 29 September 2007 There was an issue when publishing new episodes if you had selected the option to also ping the podcast directories. The episodes were getting published fine, however users were seeing an error message. That problem has been fixed. Please let us know about any more publishing-releted issues as we have made some recent changes to the publishing system. Sorry again for the inconvenience. Fri, 28 September 2007 Some of you may have had a hard time connecting to Libsyn FTP in the last day or so. One of the FTP servers was not handling logins properly and had to be re-started, and you should be able to access your FTP accounts once again. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 3:30 PM Comments[3] |
Sat, 22 September 2007 We have multiple reports of download requests resulting in "404 File Not Found" errors. We have verified this issue and have an open support ticket with the CDN that is the source of the problem. We will work with them to get this fixed as quickly as possible, and apologize for the inconvenience. Update: This issue was confirmed to be resolved at 8:45pm Update: 9/23: The issues with the 404 on media files requests is happening again. We were told it was a corruption of our CDN's core database occurred yesterday after a server crash, however it was repaired. We are in contact with our providers and working to resolve the issue and/or temporarily route around it while the problems persist. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 7:30 PM Comments[1] |
Sat, 25 August 2007 Almost exactly 48 hours after the initial drop we're seeing almost full recovery of traffic. We will continue to monitor the graphs and traffic curves. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 3:45 PM Comments[1] |
Thu, 23 August 2007 At about 2:30 EST on Thursday, Aug 23, there was a momentary DNS misconfiguration that caused some users to be unable to view the site, or in fact, resolve anything under the libsyn.com domain. The situation was recognized and resolved immediately, but due to the nature of the DNS system, some users have cached the incorrect data, either on their computer, or on the ISP DNS servers. As with everything DNS related, the caches will time out, and the correct data will be received, and we've been told the maximum time this will take is 24 hours. (It's usually much shorter, however) In the meantime, a potential remedy for end users is a reboot of their computer to hopefully flush that local cache. We apologize for any downtime. Thu, 8 March 2007 We are battling some database issues right now. Logins are currently being affected by the issue. We will keep you posted on the status. Update: (12:30) The database issues have been repaired. In an effort to reduce database load, we have temporarily taken down the libsyn directory. The code will be revamped and brought back online quicker and better then ever very soon. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 11:09 AM Comments[0] |
Fri, 2 March 2007 Many users may have been experiencing problems uploading and/or connecting to FTP (same issue) this morning. The issue has been resolved. Sorry for the interruption. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 12:43 PM Comments[1] |
Wed, 21 February 2007 We are still cleaning up from some issues last night, one lingering one is some flakeyness with FTP this morning. Please be sure when you are connecting via ftp to use the host name: ftp.libsyn.com and also make sure your connection type is set to passive. We are working hard to get things back to normal with FTP as well as some problems people are having modifying or viewing their blog pages with proper templates. All issues will be resolved ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience. Update: There was some hardware issues that was/is causing the blogpage template issues. While the techs in the datacenter work on the issue, we can repair templates on an individual basis. If you don't modify your blogtemplate during this outtage, you shouldn't notice any problems. If you do, and your page is broken, let us know via meebo chat and we'll fix you up. Update: The issue with the blog templates should be back to normal now, however the FTP uploading issue has rolled into a system-wide uploading problem which we are now fighting. Please hold off attempting to upload anything new for the time being while we work this out. Thank you Update: It's been a rough day, uploading should be working ok now. There were some file propagation issues, but everything should be synced up now. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 11:09 AM Comments[0] |
Tue, 3 October 2006 This is an update regarding some outstanding bugs that have been affecting users. Feedburner - There were some problems on our end regarding feedburned feeds. We talked to the guys when we were at the expo, and that got resolved on friday. Image Display Issues - Some users have been reporting images not showing properly in browsers, especially IE. But we made some adjustments and believe this to be fixed. Archiving - Archiving was not functioning properly, that is back to normal now. Stats - Looks like the stats backup is still struggling to keep up. Right now it looks like there is the beachball of death, but we are aware of it and will get that fixed. Upload Bugs - As far as the 1970 and 1969 date bugs, we believe these to be fixed but we are continuing to be on the lookout. Please let us know if there are still any outstanding issues. Fri, 4 August 2006 We are working on the issue with stats loading. Will post when it's been resolved.
Update: Just got off the phone with the stats gods, I was assured that everything is being collected, however the server which delivers the XML to the stats app is down. It takes a while to reboot it and bring the process back up, so I hope everyone can hold tight while we work through the night if needed to get things back to normal. The stats processing is currently going through a massive overhaul. Part of the upgrades will include some new hardware. We understand the importance of timely, accurate statistics, and second to reliable media delivery, it's the thing you all really care most about. We're on it. it's going to take a little time, thank you for understanding. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 12:33 AM Comments[5] |
Tue, 1 August 2006 How do you promise something will never happen again, and then face everyone when it does? For approx 20-30 minutes early this morning, a intermittent cache problem occurred on some of our newest hardware causing the switched file issue again. It's never possible to assess the full scope of the damage in this situation, but even 1 wrongly delivered file is cause for major alarm for us.
Fortunately (and unfortunately) the issue was the same as last time. The error we made this time, though, was that the fix was not properly incorporated into our build script for new media nodes. Just as we though we were helping the network by bringing on 30% more hardware, it turns around and bites us for not installing all the proper fixes. The patch that had been applied to the previous nodes has now been applied. I don't know how many more times you're going to accept our apologizes on this (the most critical or critical) error. We now need to make sure the stickies around our monitors have prominence that say "Add to the new build script!!!" on every new fix and tweak. Sorry to start off your day with this. Our hope is that we caught the issue in time as to not have affected too many downloads. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 6:04 AM Comments[7] |
Tue, 11 July 2006 Some of you have been reporting that there are files hanging around in your account which should have archived by now. We are addressing this issue by revisiting our archival mechanism, increasing the number of "sweeps" it makes through the system each day, which should make each archive run less intensive and lead to fewer problems. In the meantime, please let us know if you have a file that is supposed to be archived, but is not, by posting to this thread. Many of you have given us a heads up already, and we appreciate that. Thanks- Category: Bugs -- posted at: 10:52 PM Comments[3] |
Sun, 25 June 2006 To support some of the new features we are developing, we did a major rev upgrade of some of our core software. The results were great on all fronts, except our support ticket system.
Nothing got lost, however all the ticket assignments that we use to keep things organized and put into queues so that they get answered in some reasonable amount of time, got reset. This means there's going to be a couple good days worth of work to go back and re-queue everything. We appreciate your patience if support responses are slower than expected while we get things sorted out. Thank you. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 7:56 AM Comments[5] |
Mon, 17 April 2006 Our SSL certificate is up for renewal, and we have had some difficulties getting the new one in. There is nothing funky going on, or any of the scary messages the different browsers may give.
We will have it resolved shortly. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 11:39 AM Comments[0] |
Mon, 10 April 2006 We experienced a couple of bugs this monday related to upgrades to the system. Early this morning the system was timing out and delivering 404s on some requests. A bug was discovered later in the day where some file redirects were delivering the files of other libsyn users. We have since restored things to normal and will work to make sure these problems are prevented in the future. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 6:41 PM Comments[2] |
Mon, 10 April 2006 We have resolved the domain mapping problem. Any users still experiencing any domain related issues please contact us at support@libsyn.com with subject "Domain Outage 4/9/06". Category: Bugs -- posted at: 12:13 AM Comments[0] |
Sun, 9 April 2006 We are experiencing a temporary domain name glitch this evening. Accounts that utilize domain names are resolving to the libsyn homepage. We expect to have this resolved soon. We will follow up with an update. After which, any users experiencing any domain related issues please contact us at support@libsyn.com with subject "Domain Outage 4/9/06". Sat, 1 April 2006 In the middle of routine updates to the DNS server, we ran into a little glitch that has caused some widespread panic and redirection problems. Our boys are hard at work fixing the problem and should be resolved very shortly. update: Everything is cool now. Nevermind the glitch. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 4:56 PM Comments[3] |
Wed, 22 March 2006 So we got a small flood of emails from users experiencing false "Over Quota" alerts- as they clearly didn't have as much media in their account as we were reporting. The blanket cause of that we had some backups of user directories foating around the system which were still associated to the users and therefore counting against their quotas.
We will get through all the emails and ensure the issues have been solved for everyone, it will just take us a little time.
Thanks Category: Bugs -- posted at: 1:05 PM Comments[0] |
Tue, 21 March 2006 A few people have emailed in and posted on the forum about problems logging in through FTP. We are trying to determine a contributing factor as to why only some accounts are having this problem. A fix for the issue is to login via the web, and under the account tab, change your password. You can "change" it to what it already is, and it will automatically kick the ftp system into recognizing it.

Sun, 5 March 2006 Hey everyone. As many people have noticed, the archiving procedure has been not happening for the past few days. We are working on implementing a temporary fix, which is disk quotas have been disabled. From the Account tab, you will look like you are over quota, but you are not, and uploads will still go through.
We ask that everyone respect the system and not go crazy uploading more then your account allows. Once we finish running the update scripts to archive the files that need to be archived, we will turn the quotas back on. If you have more media uploaded that your account will allow, you will be over quota again.
Again, your account will look like it's over quota and disabled from uploading, however you ARE still able to upload while we fix the archiving situation Thank you and sorry for taking an extra couple days to resolve this problem Category: Bugs -- posted at: 9:09 PM Comments[4] |
Fri, 24 February 2006 Regretfully, we are still having some account-management issues with our new system. Currently affected are new account signups, account password changes, and account quota updates. We hope to have all these issues worked out today. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Tue, 21 February 2006 Today we implemented measures that should help avoid the recent time-outs being experienced by libsyn users who burn their feeds with FeedBurner. Thanks to the FeedBurner crew for being pro-active about working with us to resolve these issues. If you are a libsyn / feedburner user who was affected by this problem in the past, please let us know how things are working for you now. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 1:23 PM Comments[1] |
Sat, 18 February 2006 Hey guys,
Around 5pm eastern there was a glitch in our caching system for rss feeds. The feeds were temporarily unavailable. We did not see a significant drop in traffic, and things are again functioning properly.

Tue, 24 January 2006 Note on spam:
We seemed to have uncovered another access point into our comment system. We are working to patch the newly discovered issue as quickly as possible. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 8:35 PM Comments[2] |
Sat, 29 October 2005 Since we introduced the public RSS feed option and the ability to redirect your-username.libsyn.com/rss to that address, some of you have taken advantage of this feature to redirect your libsyn feed URL to your feedburner feed. This caused a slight problem, since feedburner gets your feed information by checking your libsyn feed (thus creating an infinite loop). We got together with the folks at feedburner to fix this problem as soon as we leanred of it. If anyone is still having problems with their feed, please drop an email to support. Thanks. Sun, 9 October 2005 From 10am until around 1PM today you may have experienced slow connections to libsyn and probably even some timeouts. The cause of the problem stemmed from the way we were previously handling the archive media network. When we started, the archive network was 6:1 smaller than the main media delivery network. As we have grown, the amount of data in the archives continues to grow so we have had to expand the number of nodes. The network logic, however, hadn't been scaled with the addition of more servers.
The main libsyn media delivery network has been greatly tweaked and enhanced to provide seamless data delivery in the event of hardware or software failure on any of the individual nodes. Currently serving over 2 million media files a week, or approx. 7 terrabytes of data, its been pretty good for the most part. Outside issues dealing with databases, general network outtages, and file uploading aside, the libsyn media delivery network has had a pretty good track record with download speeds usually topping anything we see from other media websites. This mornings issues have caused us to reevaluate the handling of the archive network and upgrade it to the level of robustness we have in place for the main media network. Fri, 7 October 2005 It looks like connections between cogent and level 3 are coming back up, as seen here: http://status.cogentco.com/ We are here monitoring everything, and working to keep things as smooth as possible. We'll keep you posted. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 4:54 PM Comments[0] |
Thu, 6 October 2005 It's a crap deal, two big internet service providers, cogent and level 3 are in a tiff. They are not talking to each other. I'm not trying to be funny, it's crappy whats going on. An email should have been sent out, it may have fallen into black whole that these providers have created. Bottom line, for those of you that can't reach libsyn send us your ip addresses. We are passing those off to our datacenter guy who is manually rerouting how our site gets to you. Also important, according to our charts your shows are being served to MOST of your audience. This apparently has never happened before. It's not just us either, parts of the internet can't get to other parts of the internet. Big companies being Big Jerks. I need coffee. below is better explanations by my more eloquent buddies. Here's the drafts: Marty put it like this: Hey everyone... libsyn is up and running and has been since the migration last Sunday night. What you're experiencing is the result of a corporate catfight between 2 major networks who facilitate large amounts of inter-connectivity across the net. Dave C said this: Dear libsyn customers- Sorry to invade your inbox with more email, however we wanted to let everyone know we are ontop of the current issue going on in Internet land. "This is history in the making" says our ISP. http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/05/10/05/2247207.shtml We are working to get around this issue which mostly seems to be affecting TimeWarner Roadrunner users specifically by taking the IP addresses of the users being affected, looking at the IP block of their provider, and manually adjusting our BGP tables. If all that went right over your head, no problem. Bottom line: if you are having troubles connecting to libsyn.com, we are not offline. Please email support@libsyn.com with your IP address, and we will work our best to reroute the connection so you can get in. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 2:48 PM Comments[5] |
Tue, 27 September 2005 I just want to acknowledge the slowdowns, followed by a short period of downtime, we experienced this morning. From around 9:00-10:30am we saw a significant performance hit on the main server. For about 15 minutes of that time, the site was completely down. I apologize for your frustration- we take libsyn uptime very seriously and have admittedly struggled the past month to maintain consistency throughout our network.
The problem this morning was caused by a runaway media node that backed a lot of traffic up to the main server. I'll be implementing a threshold today to prevent this particular problem in the future. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 1:09 PM Comments[0] |
Mon, 19 September 2005 Hey Guys,
Everything should be coming around very soon. It took well over twelve hours for the whole thing to normalize since the server downage yesterday. With podcasting there is never any slow of traffic, so there is no recoup time. Our email, was down so we are backed up on support emails, but we will get to everything. We are literally in the last stretch of getting to all systems go. We will let you guys know when we are 100% on here
as always.. talk is cheap.. we'll get things back on track.
Very sorry about the inconvenience. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 4:13 PM Comments[2] |
Tue, 30 August 2005 Updated Wed 8/31 2:39am EDT We are getting occasional reports of file downloads being cut-off. We are working to try and figure out a connection between the incidents of file truncation. Please email support@libsyn.com right away if you are experiencing similar issues. Almost exactly 48 hours after the initial drop we're seeing almost full recovery of traffic. We will continue to monitor the graphs and traffic curves.
