Wed, 15 November 2006 After about 1,000 emails all requesting the same feature, we finally caught on. The stats display version 1.5.1 was rolled out tonight and features (are you ready stats junkies?) "Remove record" feature! So finally you can go in remove errant files from your stats display. Please be cautious when doing this- we don't want to create a new problem while we fix another ("Dear support, I accidently deleted the stats for all my shows, HELP!!!!!!!!"). Ok? There's an "are you sure" popup that you have to confirm before the record is actually deleted, but still, pay attention to what you are doing. Currently, when you delete a single episode's stats, it has to go in and re-parse the XML to draw that display again. I know, it's lame, but the double buffering array thing we are doing has given me a double headache, and well, you shouldn't have to use this feature too often and I wanted to get it out into your hands sooner rather then later. Also, a slight performance boost was given to the XML loader in this version. Shows with several years of data still take 20+ seconds to load, but hopefully alot of you will notice snappier load times. More great stuff to come! Mon, 13 November 2006 It's been a long time coming (too long) but today we are upgrading our server software for statistics. This is primarily a behind-the-scenes upgrade intended to bring increased reliability to our statistics system, and to enable future release of highly desired features such as remove-your-own-files from stats (as in the case of an erroneous upload), the Libsyn Active Audience number, and eventually Geo-stats, among many others. With our new system we have noticed that the stats display takes a little longer to load for users with many files, and will be working to bring the display time down in that case.
We will release more updates as we update the front end display as well Category: Stats -- posted at: 5:49 PM Comments[0] |
Sun, 12 November 2006 We are aware of the current stats issues people are seeing in which recent files show more days worth of stats than they have been available. This is due to some changes we have made to our network to distribute more files across more server farms, but the problem will be resolved when we upgrade our stats software within the next 24-48 hours. Tue, 7 November 2006 From around 4 - 6pm EST the libsyn media delivery network experienced slowdowns and interruptions, causing slow connections, and/or timeouts when media files were requested. At present we have associated these problems with at least one malicious IP address and are investigating further to see if we can pinpoint any other causes for the network-wide disruption. Update: We are still investigating the true reason for last night- and very early this mornings- performance issues. I am fairly convinced the IP's that we blocked coincidentally helped relieve the issue, which was caused in fact by something else. We may have jumped the gun a little bit reporting that it was a malicious attack. Thanks for everyone's support as we keep wrestling with the logs and graphs and reports to find the real problem and make sure it's fixed. Category: announcements -- posted at: 6:03 PM Comments[0] |
Mon, 6 November 2006 Hey guys, you may notice some stats irregularities this evening as we're cutting over to a new processing engine. All steps towards a better, more reliable, more accurate stats system. Thanks for your patience. Category: Stats -- posted at: 10:28 PM Comments[1] |

Sun, 29 October 2006 Sorry this post is late coming out. The team is working on some issues surrounding a flood of requests on part of the network. Many users are affected and we're working the issue. Updates to be released as we figure it out. Thank you for your patience. Update: The segment of our network seeing the problems today was caused by a propagation issue. New files were not getting out to delivery nodes quick enough which was causing a backup in requests, slow downloads and 404- file not found errors for new files. All the mounting traffic then started to cause older files to be hard to access as well, while the network was absorbing lots of requests it couldn't fill. The nodes are "catching up" now with the new media, and will be turned back on as soon as that is complete. The technical reason, for those who are interested, is being linked to the network cards on these media nodes. We are checking into the reasons why they seem to have issues, and will replace the hardware, or update the os, etc as needed. As always, we are sorry for the disturbance to your audience for these issues, and regret it took us so long to get to the bottom of the problem. Wed, 25 October 2006 Hello. We received some emails reporting slow downloads. We've noticed some congestion on one of our servers and are looking into the problem as this post is being written. We hope to have it cleared up soon. Thanks for your patience. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 2:09 PM Comments[3] |
Tue, 17 October 2006 The new hardware for the version 3 stats system has arrived and is being configured, and the code is in its final stages before deployment. There is no ETA but we are dedicating our time to its completion. The backup system went south again but it should be back up shortly. We appreciate everyone who has stuck with us during the stats issues. Category: Stats -- posted at: 3:21 PM Comments[0] |
Tue, 3 October 2006 This is an update regarding some outstanding bugs that have been affecting users. Feedburner - There were some problems on our end regarding feedburned feeds. We talked to the guys when we were at the expo, and that got resolved on friday. Image Display Issues - Some users have been reporting images not showing properly in browsers, especially IE. But we made some adjustments and believe this to be fixed. Archiving - Archiving was not functioning properly, that is back to normal now. Stats - Looks like the stats backup is still struggling to keep up. Right now it looks like there is the beachball of death, but we are aware of it and will get that fixed. Upload Bugs - As far as the 1970 and 1969 date bugs, we believe these to be fixed but we are continuing to be on the lookout. Please let us know if there are still any outstanding issues. Mon, 25 September 2006 Hey guys, this we are still working on this thing. We still do not have
a handle on what exactly is happening, but basically we are being
hammered by connections that are overloading a specific part of the
network. We worked on this all yesterday, banning bad ips and clients
and are contining to work on this today. Sorry for the lack of
communication. Thats my fault as I have been running around all day but
marty and the guys are glued to their command lines. We'll keep you
updated and get this resolved asap. dave mansueto Update: We've made some major changes to the network that we feel will balance things out much better. The distribution and balancing technique we were using needed some updating. We're going to need to see tomorrow at peek times to see if we really have things tweaked perfectly. As luck would have it, while doing some other general maintanence over the weekend, where we were adding some redundency to other key parts of the system, the back kinda broke on a segment of the network. Most new users (who've signed up in the last month or so) were affected, so we're not really starting out with our best foot forward with a lot of you. I hope you can understand that these kinds of things happen to everyone, and hope you stick with us- as you can be assured we're going to stick with you- through thick and thin. We're going to keep killing ourselves (and hopefully not each other) to ensure the best, most reliable, most stable system for all you content creators.

Sun, 24 September 2006 It looks like we are still experiencing overload on parts of our network. The connections are swamping the media nodes and this is causing the 404s you may be experiencing. We have been working on this all this evening, and are implementing a fix. We'll keep you posted. Update: Issues are back with the 1 partition. We are working to recitify the problem by moving resources around while also trying to stop the bleeding. We understand the problems this is causing many of you and we're working hard to smooth things out. Thank you for your patience. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 10:51 PM Comments[2] |
Sun, 24 September 2006 Things are back to operating normally. We are checking the logs for any strange behavior. Thu, 21 September 2006 We have made 2 updates to our terms of service. The following has been added to section II: The opinions expressed in Your Content are not necessarily (and in some cases not at all) those of libsyn. libsyn is not responsible for any Content provided by You, which is deemed harmful or offensive to others. Furthermore, libsyn is not responsible in any way for any injury, loss or damage, which occurs as a result of an opinion expressed or information, provided in Your Content or through your use of the Site. And in section V this: You may not use the Site or any Content for any purpose that is unlawful or prohibited by these Terms of Use, or to solicit the performance of any illegal activity or other activity which infringes the rights of libsyn or others. Has been replaced by: You may not use the Site or any Content for any purpose that is unlawful or prohibited by these Terms of Use, or to solicit the performance of any illegal activity or other activity which infringes the rights of libsyn or others. If we suspect that your use of the Site or any Content is unlawful or prohibited by these Terms of Use, or is soliciting performance of any illegal activity or other activity which infringes the rights of libsyn or others, we reserve the right, at our sole discretion or at the request of law enforcement officials, to indefinitely suspend your use of the Site or any Content while we and/or law enforcement officials investigate the potentially unlawful or prohibited activity. Wed, 6 September 2006 Hey everyone, there's been a ton of requests for the option to allow comments to be moderated before going live onto your blog page. We came up with a quick and dirty implementation of such a feature which, like much of the rest of the publishing system, will be improved in the upcoming months as we revise the whole publishing system
For now here's how it works. Login, under the Settings / Advanced section you'll see a check box to enable comment moderation. Once you turn that on, all comments left on your blog will be hidden until you go in and enable them. To enable the hidden comments, under the publish / previous posts screen, if you click on the comments viewer, you will see a button to enable the comments. When you have new comments, you will see a link like this when you first login (see screenshot). We're sure you're going to want additional features to support handling multiple comments at the same time, but for now we hope this holds you over. Everything has been tested and shouldn't cause any negative side effects, but please let us know right away if there are any problems. Category: announcements -- posted at: 1:03 AM Comments[0] |
Tue, 5 September 2006 Stats are back online. (1) Whilst I was at a conference, our failing stats hardware gave up the ghost for good. (2) I debated about the value of even trying to resuscitate the old system, since we are literally days away from the V3 server. (3) The rest of LibSyn convinced me that it was necessary, and special hardware was obtained and put in place to help us through the remaining days to V3. (4) This hardware is now online and serving stats. Anomalies? Shouldn't be too many, but on some of these kinds of awkward recoveries, you may see date buckets split or duplicated, esp around the time of our collapse, which was Sept 1. The future: I am in the final stages of development for the V3 server. This will not initially bring new features online, but rather new speed and (most importantly) stability. It establishes a new architecture, however, which will be far more adaptable to new features. Depending on company priorities, I would like geo-location to be the first of these features. The timeline: Sept 7 : Stats server with core functionality in stress testing mode; Sept 8 : V3 stats server ready for emergency failover if V2 dies again. Sept 10 : Extended functionality complete (referers, podcatcher info, etc.) Sept 12 : V3 stats server online. I understand this has been a rough month for stats; and ironically it was just about a year ago that I came onboard with LibSyn because V1 stats were hitting their limits. Since that time, stats have grown 150x as large as they were then, and now the V2 system, which is actually backwards compatible to V1, has hit its limit. The V3 system is redesigned from the ground up and is expected to directly support 100,000x growth and to scale without limit. Obviously, until we see all this in production it's just more words, but fortunately, we'll see it in production quite soon. Category: Stats -- posted at: 11:39 AM Comments[0] |

Sat, 2 September 2006 We realize the continued flow of comment spam is an annoying problem. We want to let everyone know, this is not a problem we are ignoring... but battling the spammers is a
full time effort, no doubt. There have been some great suggestions on
how to best deal with the comment spam and while we will be working towards a
more permanent solution, right now our development capital is being
placed in other areas.
As a short term solution, however, we have put in a hard limit on the number of links allowed in a comment post. The limit is currently set to three. Any comments with more than three links will be blocked and a message will be displayed to that user. Hopefully this will, at least for a short time, give everyone a breather from this annoyance, until we can get a more sophisticated solution in place. Sat, 19 August 2006 We are scheduling a brief period of down time on Monday, August 21 for system maintenance. This is routine maintenance and we will do everything we can to make the maintenance as painless as possible. Category: announcements -- posted at: 3:49 PM Comments[3] |
Sun, 13 August 2006 As a precursor to some greater improvements we'll be rolling out over the next few months, we've released some enhancements to the media tab. First, both archived and current media now appear in the same view. You can collapse or expand either set of files by clicking its heading. The media tab now also displays more detailed information about each file. Click any file name in the list to see details. We've also enabled group operations, so you can select a number of files and, for example, delete them, or prevent them from archiving. The second major enhancement in this release is the file uploader. When you upload files now, you can see the progress of your upload as it happens. We're hoping you all find these features useful and that they improve your experience while navigating the libsyn system. Please let us know what you think. As always, we take your feedback seriously and will use it to help shape the system. Category: Feature -- posted at: 7:57 PM Comments[8] |
Sun, 13 August 2006 (1) It's taking longer to get the next version of stats ready to go than previously hoped. My apologies to all of you. (2) Our stats server has been increasingly flaky in recent weeks, which you have noticed. (3) Today I put in a hot backup of the stats server so that we can fail over to the standby in case of further hardware issues. The downside to this hot backup is that it means I can't reliably fix stats or delete files until the v3 server is done. It's more of a parallel system than a genuine backup. Those of you with outstanding tickets in our support queue, I'll go through and send an explanation and projected timeline. Once we have v3, you will be able to control your own stats, which should benefit everyone. -Bluejack Category: Stats -- posted at: 3:58 PM Comments[5] |
Fri, 4 August 2006 We are working on the issue with stats loading. Will post when it's been resolved.
Update: Just got off the phone with the stats gods, I was assured that everything is being collected, however the server which delivers the XML to the stats app is down. It takes a while to reboot it and bring the process back up, so I hope everyone can hold tight while we work through the night if needed to get things back to normal. The stats processing is currently going through a massive overhaul. Part of the upgrades will include some new hardware. We understand the importance of timely, accurate statistics, and second to reliable media delivery, it's the thing you all really care most about. We're on it. it's going to take a little time, thank you for understanding. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 12:33 AM Comments[5] |
Tue, 1 August 2006 How do you promise something will never happen again, and then face everyone when it does? For approx 20-30 minutes early this morning, a intermittent cache problem occurred on some of our newest hardware causing the switched file issue again. It's never possible to assess the full scope of the damage in this situation, but even 1 wrongly delivered file is cause for major alarm for us.
Fortunately (and unfortunately) the issue was the same as last time. The error we made this time, though, was that the fix was not properly incorporated into our build script for new media nodes. Just as we though we were helping the network by bringing on 30% more hardware, it turns around and bites us for not installing all the proper fixes. The patch that had been applied to the previous nodes has now been applied. I don't know how many more times you're going to accept our apologizes on this (the most critical or critical) error. We now need to make sure the stickies around our monitors have prominence that say "Add to the new build script!!!" on every new fix and tweak. Sorry to start off your day with this. Our hope is that we caught the issue in time as to not have affected too many downloads. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 6:04 AM Comments[7] |

Mon, 31 July 2006 We've been gradually making some improvements to the blog engine over the past weeks, but still believe it to be in dire need of an overhaul. Some recent improvements have been made to the speed the pages load and also module attributes. Check the wiki to see the attributes currently available for the [[blog_pane ]] module.
More updates to come. We are also researching different templating engines, looking to possible support an open standards one instead of continuing to roll our own. Any suggestions? Category: Feature -- posted at: 2:45 AM Comments[2] |

Tue, 18 July 2006 Hi Everyone, We wanted to take a minute to give you all a heads up about the state of the libsyn network. Your programs continue to grow and accumulate more content and more listeners. To accomodate this we continue to build the network around your programs, growing as you do. A recent hardware order has been slightly delayed. This has caused a slight disruption in the archive process, which has in turn caused some of your accounts to go over quota. We apologize for the hassle and have in turn disabled quotas until we can get the new hardware configured and in place. Thanks for your patience, we expect to have quotas turned on and archiving back on a regular schedule by the weekend. Category: announcements -- posted at: 7:43 AM Comments[1] |
Fri, 14 July 2006 This morning, betweeen the hours of approximately 12:45am eastern to 1:45, Libsyn servers experienced a crucial distribution error on its CDN that resulted in the erroneous distribution of files on some user accounts. The problem has been identified and resolved, however during the time of the error period, affected user accounts may have had the wrong files distributed to subscriptions and direct downloads that called for files. We are extremely sorry for the confusion and surprise that this may cause the subset of audiences that have been affected by this unusual error. While this was a temporary and limited issue, it may have real unintended consequences to some individuals; we fully understand the magnitude of delivering the wrong file, even one mis-matched file is one too many. Update: Some further discussion and explanation can be found here: http://libsyn.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9643#9643 Category: announcements -- posted at: 2:00 AM Comments[2] |
Tue, 11 July 2006 Some of you have been reporting that there are files hanging around in your account which should have archived by now. We are addressing this issue by revisiting our archival mechanism, increasing the number of "sweeps" it makes through the system each day, which should make each archive run less intensive and lead to fewer problems. In the meantime, please let us know if you have a file that is supposed to be archived, but is not, by posting to this thread. Many of you have given us a heads up already, and we appreciate that. Sun, 25 June 2006 To support some of the new features we are developing, we did a major rev upgrade of some of our core software. The results were great on all fronts, except our support ticket system.
Nothing got lost, however all the ticket assignments that we use to keep things organized and put into queues so that they get answered in some reasonable amount of time, got reset. This means there's going to be a couple good days worth of work to go back and re-queue everything. We appreciate your patience if support responses are slower than expected while we get things sorted out. Thank you. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 7:56 AM Comments[5] |
Wed, 21 June 2006 Update: (3:30am) Logins enabled and full operations back online. That last wave took longer then we would have liked, but the good news is that media delivery persisted throughout the entire move. We are striving and building to the point where everything has that level of geo isolation and redudency. We will be there soon. Update: (2:00am) Third wave moved and back up. The final wave we're going to have to take our time with. We're going to lockdown logins and uploads first. Then when everyone currently uploading is complete, we'll gracefully bring everything down and then move it and bring it back as quickly as possible. There are many moving parts in this last phase, we need to make sure they all go back together properly. Update: (1:19am) Second round of machine transplants went very smooth. It started around 1:00am and took about the same amount of time roundtrip. Third wave up... Update: (12:34am) The first wave of moves started a little behind schedule, but we're moving along as planned now. The 2nd set are being powered down now. From offline in old center to online in new was about 20 minutes for round 1. Update: Just want to make sure everyone follows what's going on tonight. We are doing a migration in 4 waves, starting at 11pm EST. The first 3 waves should not cause any noticable disruption to the service. There may be some load issues that cause some slowdowns, but we don't think they'll be too bad. The network should self-heal, and load balance around the machines in transit to the new facility. The final wave, which should probably hit around 2am EST, will put the service into a temporary "lockdown" mode. While we're locked down, media will continue to be delivered, but most other functions of the site will be down for 15-20 minutes. We have lots of hands on deck to ensure this process happens as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. Redbull in hand, we're in for a long night. If there are any hiccups in our plan, we will react fast and recover. Thank you for your understanding and support. The maintenance that was announced (and then postponed) in this post, has been rescheduled for this Wednesday. We will be performing some critical maintenance that will cause anywhere between 20-45 minutes of restricted access to libsyn publisher services. RSS feeds will be unavailable for a short time, as will files in your /images and /_static folders. Work will begin around 11pm EDT Wednesday night and should take a few hours. To re-iterate, during this time there will be a period of 20-45 minutes (most likely later in the night / around 2am) where some services become unavailable. Media delivery should continue unfettered, and we will work as quickly and carefully as possible to minimize the impact on you and your listeners. Thanks for understanding. Tue, 20 June 2006 Around 5AM (EST) several of our servers were targeted by a ddos attack (distributed denial of service). As a result, the main libsyn page, uploads, your blog pages, rss feeds, the forums, and mail services were all affected. Links to media were affected, but not completely down (connects were slow due to the load shifting on to all the nodes that weren't affected).
We sincerely apologize for the disruption. Our tech team at the datacenter did a great job working with the service providers to restore the service as quickly as they could. It unfortunately took a few hours.
The nodes are coming back online now, and we should be back to full operating power shortly. Thank you for understanding and sticking with us through some rough waters this past week. Category: announcements -- posted at: 9:15 AM Comments[3] |

Mon, 12 June 2006 Update:
Early Monday morning for about an hour, a segment of our users were unable to upload new content or have access to their blog pages. RSS feeds and media delivery did not suffer from the issue which was hardware related. The team maintained as much of the service as was possible while the hardware issue was resolved at the data center.
Additionally some Libsyn users have experienced problems with the blog page, or logging in to upload new media. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this interruption. As always we are striving to improve service and quickly react to unforeseen events. Category: announcements -- posted at: 12:02 AM Comments[8] |
Sun, 11 June 2006 We are no longer calculating statistics on the following file formats: "jpg", "jpeg", "gif", "png", "html", "htm", "phtml", "xml". This is to counteract the inflation of audience statistics due to the inclusion of these files in the media distribution folder, as well as to optimize the performance of our stats engine. Images, as a general rule, should be uploaded using the "new post" form, or via FTP to your /images folder. Any concerns about this revision should be sent to support@libsyn.com with subject: 7/11/06 Stats Revision. Category: Stats -- posted at: 2:42 PM Comments[0] |
Fri, 2 June 2006 Hey everyone, we need to get our heads out of the weeds and explain some poor performance over the last few days. There have been some spots where media delivery has slowed, timed-out on the start, and generally been flakey. A few culprits have popped up, and one by one we have been dealing with them. Some of them have been hardware, some misbehaving software clients, others network related. We wish we could proclaim that we have found the sliver and pulled it from the lion's paw... but in this case, the damn cat fell in a bit of a picker bush. Fri, 26 May 2006 We had a short outage of media delivery yesterday, May 25th (for about 40 minutes just after noon, eastern time). It looks to have been a denial of service attack targeting a few key machines in the network. We acted quickly to switch to a hot backup we had in place for just this kind of scenario, and took appropriate actions to block the offending ip(s). Tue, 23 May 2006 Ok everyone, we have scheduled the system maintenance (spoken of in the previous post) for this friday, may 26th. We will begin around 10pm EST and expect to work through the night. Most of it will be transparent to you all, but we do expect a short period of down-time for the main libsyn site, blog pages, and RSS feeds (media delivery will continue unfettered) some time after midnight. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks! Category: announcements -- posted at: 1:57 PM Comments[0] |
Mon, 15 May 2006 UPDATE: The move has been delayed some as our techs at the datacenter double and triple check wiring, configurations, and routing for all of our equipment. We will make a new post here with at least 24 hours notice of when the actual upgrade is going to take place. -- Our primary datacenter is upgrading and expanding (partially to meet our growing demands). We have been working through a series of updates and are a reaching a point where there will been some physical hardware shifted around this coming week. Through careful planning and our redundancy in multiple datacenters, we intend to keep mission critical functions, like serving media to your audience, up and functioning at all times. There will however be a short period on Tuesday, May 16th where you will be unable to upload new media, login to post shows or check stats for up to an hour. We will be dialing in the exact times as this stage of the process grows closer, and will post an update with the latest news. This estimate is the worst-case scenario, and our technical team will be in constant communication with the folks "on the ground," ready to react to any issues that should arise during the transition. As always, we want you all to have complete clarity and understanding of what we are doing and that we are focused on ensuring the least inconvenience and downtime possible. Thanks Category: announcements -- posted at: 7:04 AM Comments[5] |
Sat, 13 May 2006 We have repaired a service which has caused a brief outage we experienced tonight. Everything is back to 100% and we are making the necessary steps right now to ensure this particular issue does not arise again.
We learned tonight, yet another, thing that can go wrong. Luckily we had the hands in the right places to react and bring things back to normal Category: announcements -- posted at: 8:50 PM Comments[1] |
Fri, 5 May 2006 LibSyn blog engine 2.7 is online today. We'll be updating the wiki w/ better documentation on what the new engine can do. It's incremental changes as we work towards a grand rewrite of how the blog page functions. If things are starting to not work right on your page, please contact support@libsyn right away. Thu, 4 May 2006 It looks like that some physical damage has affected two our our high level connections. We are told that there are crews on site from Level 3 and Cogent. Our data center is working on a reroute, and we should now be back online for many of you. We are about 1/2 way to having full redundancy on the libsyn network and expect to be fully redundant across multiple datacenters / geographic locations early this summer. We apologize for the inconvenience Category: announcements -- posted at: 12:59 PM Comments[0] |
Tue, 18 April 2006 We have put out a new flash display for the statistics we collect. It's just incremental fixes and changes, mostly to help reduce the confusion and help people learn: 'How big is my audience?'. We're not there yet, as you'll notice a large coming soon sign on a quater of the overall stats portion of the app. However, we'll be activating those sections very soon, as well as releasing RSS stats (!!!) and tying the LES (libsyn estimated statistics) as well as new term for all you acronym lovers to chew on: LAA (libsyn active audience) into the Kiptronic podcast marketplace. The LES numbers most requested by potential sponsors are "Impressions" and "Audience." We will be offering impressions (LES for all episodes) that will represent activity across your whole show: yesterday, last week, last month, and for all time. We will also be offering active audience- our score for how many people we calculate that right now, actively listen/watch your show. This takes into account web downloads as well as iTunes and other podcatchers. The LAA formula we are using for that has been posted and will be discussed of the forum. Mon, 17 April 2006 Our SSL certificate is up for renewal, and we have had some difficulties getting the new one in. There is nothing funky going on, or any of the scary messages the different browsers may give.
We will have it resolved shortly. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 11:39 AM Comments[0] |
Fri, 14 April 2006 We had a rough spell yesterday morning (Tuesday, April 13th) from around 7:30 until 9:30am. Many files on the network were coming up as "Not Found." This was a regrettable side effect of a new measure we've been trying to fit into place over the past few weeks. The new measure is meant to give improperly formed links a better chance at finding their destination file. While the implementation of this measure has been rough and presented us with a number of unexpected issues, the end result will be a more fail-safe and balanced network. Our apologies for the intermittent troubles. We'll keep you posted here on the progress / any ongoing issues with the media delivery network. Wed, 12 April 2006 If it looks like your stats are missing newer files, here's the story: I
rolled out a new version of the stats engine yesterday to support some
upcoming features, but I added a bug.
This bug fails to put the right date on some files. If you appear to be missing some files, check the bottom of your stats page: probably they have been tagged with what the unix world likes to call the "Beginning of Time" (1970). I am working to correct this bug and should have the fix in place this afternoon at some point. If you have sent a ticket to support, thank you! You'll get a reply. I'll be using your reports to ensure that the fix actually does correct all the possible problems from this bug. -Bluejack PS: For the technically minded: stats keeps a local cache snapshot of the master data for all shows; in this new version, the local cache is failing to get the correct upload time from the master database. I changed some of this code in order to more gracefully handle dates for shows that are no longer in the master database, but clearly I missed something important. In order to fix the bug, I will need to find the erroneous caching code & rebuild the cache & roll a new stats app. Category: Stats -- posted at: 6:17 PM Comments[0] |
Mon, 10 April 2006 We experienced a couple of bugs this monday related to upgrades to the system. Early this morning the system was timing out and delivering 404s on some requests. A bug was discovered later in the day where some file redirects were delivering the files of other libsyn users. We have since restored things to normal and will work to make sure these problems are prevented in the future. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 6:41 PM Comments[2] |

Fri, 7 April 2006 Over the course of the next 24 hours, we will be migrating the delivery nodes of the libsyn system. The upgrade will allow for better performance and ensure more accurate statistics for those folks who inadvertently link directly to the edge nodes instead of http://media.libsyn.com/media/username/file. That is still the proper way to link to your media, but sometimes the improper links get out there.. maybe someone who likes a show copies the url and posts it somewhere else. We've seen an increasing number of these types of occurrences, and this will fix that.
We've been trying different options for a while now, and have finally come up with a solution that we are confident with. You wouldn't believe the weird things that happen with some file types. Did you know if you pass a query string to a .m4a file, quicktime won't play it in a web browser? Ya, we found that out the hard way.
So, as always, please bring to our immediate attention any delivery issues that you see over the weekend. We want to make sure the ship is tight before the monday morning rush. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 11:08 PM Comments[4] |
Wed, 5 April 2006 A mysql error blocked connections from our stats database from 2:05:36 am to 4:47:13 pm; we will be recovering the data and restarting the stats system within the next couple of hours. Sat, 1 April 2006 For people who see the full KTML/WYSIWYG text edit box, and still wish to author HTML in an external tool (like Dreamweaver) and paste it in, you must first click the "W/H" button which flips the view into html mode. Then if you enter code, you can flip back to WYSIWYG mode and see the html rendered.
It is important to not paste HTML code on the WYSIWYG side, as the tags will get displayed in your blog page, and look like crap. Example: http://libsyn.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7298#7298

Wed, 22 March 2006 So we got a small flood of emails from users experiencing false "Over Quota" alerts- as they clearly didn't have as much media in their account as we were reporting. The blanket cause of that we had some backups of user directories foating around the system which were still associated to the users and therefore counting against their quotas.
We will get through all the emails and ensure the issues have been solved for everyone, it will just take us a little time.

Wed, 22 March 2006 Hello podcasting world-
Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up on things. I know we said 2 weeks ago that archiving was getting turned back on, and disk quotas were going back into effect. Well, finally, as of tonight, they are. So if you went crazy uploading during the period of no-quota, you're account will be over quota now. Hopefully noone did.
In other news. we have been a little tardy the past few days in responding to emails and to forum posts. We are going to try to make it a general rule of thumb to get through emails before we hit the forums. The time to do both, AND make improvements to the system is so sparse, so in order we'll answer: emails, then forum, then person instant messages. The bigger problem, however, is that our system has bugs and we have poor documentation. The first thing is our constant "to-do" list and we will make improvements with over time. Now that it's spring- we're kicking our house cleaning into high gear. As for the other thing, documentation, here's where we're calling on all of you to help us out a little (if you have some time). Now that it's the 21st century, we have finally put some work into our documentation wiki. http://docs.libsyn.com is now updated a little more (working on it even as we type this email) and we openly welcome all your libsyn zealots to come help us fill in the cracks. Now, we know you all would do it just for your unconditional love of podcasting, but we do have plans to reward the big contributors (that goes for the community forum as well). Everything from sticker, pins, t-shirts, free accounts, marty's car.. will be given as small tokens of our appreciation to those who have continued to give back to the community. Having a good set of documentation will greatly cut down on the number of support emails we currently get. We'll try to emerge a practical compliment between the forum and the wiki so new users (and old) can self diagnose and help themselves understand the common issues of libsyn. Then a quick stop at the http://support.libsyn.com blog for system alerts and issues, and then last resort an email. We hope everyone is enjoying the new hardware that has been put in place over the last couple weeks. Good news coming from the Kiptronic camp as well in terms of new sponsors coming into the marketplace very soon as well as some awesome new features we'll be excited to share with everyone soon. I will take a quick minute to talk about one of those, and that is libsyn stats. As mentioned on our stats display for months now, RSS stat feeds are almost ready to roll. What is also going to happen, is those users who choose to sign up for the kiptronic marketplace will automatically get their libsyn stats fed into the kiptronic system and displayed to potential sponsors. IF YOU ARE NOT USING KIPTRONIC, YOUR STATS WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH THEM. That's very important to note that we will not disclose your information to anyone who you have not given express consent to. The way you authorize the sharing of your audience data with other libsyn partners (soon to come) is through the advanced settings tab. We are also considering releasing podcast rankings to the public for those who wish to opt in. We welcome your feedback on these topics, either via private email or in the public community forum. As always, thank you all for letting us syndicate your content. It is an honor. Thank you for hangin with libsyn, through thick and thin, and helping to build the greatest network of podcasts in the 'verse. (Firefly fans, let me hear ya) Leaving you with a little support podcast that was sent to us recently. Wouldn't it be funny if everyone sent us audio support requests? podcast supportlet me answer that.. . no Comments[3] |
Tue, 21 March 2006 A few people have emailed in and posted on the forum about problems logging in through FTP. We are trying to determine a contributing factor as to why only some accounts are having this problem. A fix for the issue is to login via the web, and under the account tab, change your password. You can "change" it to what it already is, and it will automatically kick the ftp system into recognizing it.

Mon, 13 March 2006 ![]() Because archiving was off for a number of days, we have had to turn it back on again in phases. We've made multiple sweeps of your home directories, archiving files that are 30 days old, and the plan is to make another complete sweep again tonight, re-enable quotas, and then put archiving back on an automated schedule. At least one person has pointed out that a number of files that were archived on Friday were resulting in 404's. This was because of a short archive run that went astray. We believed we had restored all of the missing files, but if we missed one user, it is possible there are more. If you notice 404's on any of your archived files, please let us know right away. Finally, while we are hustling behind the scenes here at libsyn hq, Dave M. has been on the road meeting with various friends in the industry. In this picture, Dave is discussing some funding options with our new financial analyst... stay tuned for more. Category: announcements -- posted at: 1:37 PM Comments[4] |
Sat, 11 March 2006 If you have a new account with libsyn (created within the last 3 weeks or so) there is a possibility that your files will result in a 404 file not found error for a short period this evening. This is a result of more shuffling and shifting (see previous post). The outage should not last more than a matter of minutes, so if you are having persistent problems getting your files (say, longer than 10 minutes), please contact our resident shuffler and shifter, Marty. You can get Marty on skype (martymulligan) or by submitting a support request via email to support@libsyn.com. If you are requesting support related to a new account that is receiving 404's on your files, please put "404" somehwere in the subject line.
Thanks, this is a pre-emptive notice. We don't expect there to be issues with these moves, but in case there are, we wanted you all to have some point of refence to work from.
thanks-

Mon, 6 March 2006 Some users may have experienced some brief 404 issues on new uploads. We are in the process of shuffling some nodes around. More things dealing with the archives which have started to backup the main media network a bit. We have a grasp on things and should hopefully have a solid solution in place this evening.
The issues with the archives not processing, and new uploads 404-ing are temporary and should be resolved shortly Category: announcements -- posted at: 9:47 PM Comments[2] |
Sun, 5 March 2006 Hey everyone. As many people have noticed, the archiving procedure has been not happening for the past few days. We are working on implementing a temporary fix, which is disk quotas have been disabled. From the Account tab, you will look like you are over quota, but you are not, and uploads will still go through.
We ask that everyone respect the system and not go crazy uploading more then your account allows. Once we finish running the update scripts to archive the files that need to be archived, we will turn the quotas back on. If you have more media uploaded that your account will allow, you will be over quota again.
Again, your account will look like it's over quota and disabled from uploading, however you ARE still able to upload while we fix the archiving situation Thank you and sorry for taking an extra couple days to resolve this problem Category: Bugs -- posted at: 9:09 PM Comments[4] |
Wed, 1 March 2006 For many users today, downloads have been unacceptably slow to start, and speeds have been lower than usual. New uploads may result in a 404 while the file has not propagated through our entire system. Please give it a few minutes on new uploads for the file to get around. If you would like to upload a file without having it added to your RSS feed, you can 'Save as Draft' from the publish page. Then you can check the file from the media tab, and once the file downloads, you can safely go into the previous posts page and check the box to add the episode to your feed. For those that use an external RSS feed/blog, once you upload the file, please just hold off on posting it until the downloads resolve.
This is just a workaround while we get more optimizations and new hardware online. Thank you everyone for your patience and support.Update: The 404 issues due to delayed propagation should be taken care of. Feel free to publish directly and not have to 'Save as Draft' and wait. Wed, 1 March 2006 Over the past 12-18 hours we have seen an increasingly drastic number of requests coming from non-standard user agents. We need to take some measures to react to the activity that is best described as "unfriendly" (ie, thousands of GET requests for the same file). Currently we've started to block: GET requests with blank user agents GET requests from Microsoft BITS/6.6 GET requests from MovableType/3.2 GET requests from MovableType/3.16 GET requests from WXHttp/1.0 GET requests from GI Oct 14 2005 20:54:03 We will be adding to this list until we can re-stabilize and thoroughly understand the root of the wacky (destructive) behavior. Sat, 25 February 2006 Hello the best of the podcasting world-
We would like to give you a 5 minute overview of 'what happened this week'. For the majority of you, the transactions of this past week were fairly painless and transparent. For some, it's been a major headache. We are now on the other side of the mountain of what was one of the largest internal data structure migrations libsyn has seen to date. Trumped possibly only by the moving of our main webserver to a new data center last summer, this week we dramatically changed the internal system of how all your podcasts are stored, archived, retrieved, and served. This change is just step 1 of an ongoing improvement to the way we will be doing our media delivery network. Aside from just being a long winded excuse for why we have been slow to answer support emails, or why the site was locked out to European users during their 'prime time' a few nights ago, or why earlier in the week we crippled our delivery capability by almost 50%, I would also like to share some near-term improvements that everyone should enjoy as the results of our work this week. The bad. Needless to say, sunday morning turned into sunday evening and before we knew it, it was 2AM and our backs were against the wall. We HAD to start the switchover. We started the wheels in motion when, something that could best be compared to virtually tripping over the power cord happened- actually, it was more like reaching for the cold water tap and turning the hot. It wasn't a _mistake_ in action, instead, the right action was performed in the wrong place. The result: our highly tuned, prized media delivery network turned 180 degrees and ate itself for 20 seconds. The outcome was almost 1/2 the media mirrored on our system was vaporized. Gone. Poof. With less than 7 hours before the big monday morning rush, strung out on Red Bull and Bawls, 3 days behind on sleep, we gasped. Within 20 seconds after realizing what had happened, the team composed themselves and took to the painful process of rebuilding the data structures. In order to backfill 10,000+ files (20-50MB each) across 30 servers quickly, we had no choice but to pull the plug on media delivery until we could get caught up. Believe me when I say making that call to cut the network is the absolute last thing we ever want to do. But, by 10AM we were back online and serving at around 75-80% capacity. Monday hit, and hurt, but overall we saw a less than 10% deduction in overall numbers for the day. The big traffic, which pushes well past midnight EST, makes the self-healing process for the network 100x harder. We licked our wounds overnight, but it wasn't enough to get the network back to 100% by Tuesday morning. Tuesday's usually go somewhat slower, between the big Mondays and Wednesdays of the week. But with our tail still between our legs a bit, it was another rough day. The feedburner timeouts where mitigated somewhat by some sharp collaboration between Rick of feedburner and our Marty Mulligan, but overall delivery and uploads and the like were slower than we wanted to see. The idea was to start all over again with the 'big switchover' tuesday night, however given that we wouldn't have enough manpower around wednesday morning (while part of the team was traveling) we opted for a wednesday after-work start. Wednesday went a little better now that we were back to 100%, but we were still getting dangerously close to a point of media storage that we didn't want to be. That clock was ticking and we knew we had to get the switchover started. Ever hear 'a watched pot never boils' ? Well watching an s-copy of 130gigs never finishes. The hours were pushing well past midnight, and once again, we were consumed with a few other gotchas that surfaced in preparation for the big move. So then there was thursday. We had pretty much run out of time, and the move needed to happen. All the data was now synced between the old servers and the new cluster. Everyone had a good dinner and we sat down around 8PM. We all had our hit lists. The skype call was crystal clear that night. All systems were go for a midnight "plug-swap" .... .. And then there's this blurr period. Anyone ever notice that clocks skip everything between 10pm and 1am? It's true. And so, we were looking at 1:00am and still no action. Throughout the week, we had posted a notice in the support blog, but then kept pulling it offline as the dates and times kept changing. We figured anyone who actually follows that was pretty much fed up with us, and since we had calculated everything regarding the switchover, we figured 10-20 minutes of lock-out wouldn't affect anyone too much. We decided that in an hour we would make our move. We posted to support.libsyn.com that at 2AM est. we would lock down uploads, prevent anyone from logging in, and that everything would be fine in less than an hour. Now, here's where software engineering meets the real, cold, lonely world: 2am comes, we break from our virtual skype huddle and begin to execute like a killer attack squad. In 5 minutes we have all the scripts changed over that need to be changed, we're logging in and testing uploads, downloads, sideloads, and crossloads.. everything is great. Skype (y)'s abound. Talks of the (beer) celebration began. Hoopes even began to (flex). Then things got... well... weird. Pages were loading super slow. And one by one the little things didn't really work right anymore. We were now stuck mid-integration and a elusive bug was running the system amok. With all of our heads down in the code, we burrowed our way through the scripts and data, config files and schemas, trying to find the crux of the problem. This is where I (Dave the narrator of this story) sorta shut down. I was thinking alot about the day job i had to wake up to in 4 hours. Hoopes and Marty were pretty much speaking in binary tongues as I slowly slipped from consciousness. I jolted up a moment later- damn it was 4am! We were locked out for 2 hours now and seemingly hopeless for being online anytime soon! This is where (pardon the expression) the boys showed their "juevos". I really don't even know what happened between 5 and 7:30, but the next thing I knew, we were just about ready to re-enable logins and let the world in to our new system. It was something miraculous... or Hoopes-tastic, but we turned the key, the engine roared, and we peeled out. Ya, the blinkers didn't really work yet, and there was a piece or two still hanging off, but we were able to drive, and today I can say, we have really opened her up and are having a pretty smooth ride. The pieces that we're still putting back together are new user signups, and anything involving the system-level user accounts: changing disk quota, password changes, etc. Quickcast was broken for bit, but is now working again as are all of the blog-page features. Overall this was a very strategic change in system architecture. Though the near term benefits may seem few, the long term gains from this switchover are huge. The good So, while I try to make it a point not to claim a win prematurely, or to get myself into trouble promising perfect, error-free service from here on out, I just wanted to report that after a long, difficult week, the team feels good with how things are sitting right now. We have many more changes in front of us, and anticipate demands on our network doubling before the end of the year. Can we keep up? Can we stay ahead of the game? Could you go and give your $ to someone else, and get a pretty good service for your dollar- the answer to all if these questions is "of course." But know this: the $ that you pay to libsyn is going into building something for all of us to use now and in the future. You can etch your name in a brick of this factory for self producers and publishers. Your content is fueling this fire, and your contributions are keeping the lights on. It's a great thing to be a part of, and we would like to thank you for making it happen. We get a lot of mail saying "thank you for your service." It really is _our_ service, together, and we all are the enablers of a great media revolution. Now more than ever the world needs your thoughts, voices, and hearts. So what are you waiting for? Thu, 23 February 2006 Hello good synners. The first quarter of 2006 has brought explosive growth to the libsyn network. Yesterday we delivered 1,042,739 downloads and as of this posting we are hosting more than 12,000 files on our main media network and almost 60,000 files in total. To keep up with this growing demand, we're doing some re-structuring of our network. Beginning around 2am est, logins will be disabled, as will new signups. We will do everything we can to execute our plan quickly and carefully, to minimize the wait for those of you wanting to access your account. Media delivery and all of your blog pages and RSS feeds should go unaffected. We appreciate your understanding, and your choice to be a part of the libsyn family. We will let you know when the maintenance is finished and account access is restored. Thanks, Category: announcements -- posted at: 11:57 PM Comments[6] |
Tue, 21 February 2006 We are still experiencing 404's on newly posted files. File propagation has not yet fully recovered from this weekend's issues. We are recommending that folks upload media, but hold out publishing to the rss feeds and blogs until the file has been confirmed to have reached the delivery network. You can do this in the "publish" tab by selecting "save draft", and then confirm that the file has propagated by checking http://media.libsyn.com/media/username/filename.
We are sorry for the inconvenience and will keep you posted. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 11:42 PM Comments[2] |
Tue, 21 February 2006 Today we implemented measures that should help avoid the recent time-outs being experienced by libsyn users who burn their feeds with FeedBurner. Thanks to the FeedBurner crew for being pro-active about working with us to resolve these issues. If you are a libsyn / feedburner user who was affected by this problem in the past, please let us know how things are working for you now. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 1:23 PM Comments[1] |
Mon, 20 February 2006 We regretfully had some issues regarding our system upgrades this
evening and are working to recover. As a result, data delivery will be
slowed while we restore connectivity to a large part of our network.
We will keep you posted.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Update: (10AM EST) The system has been restored to approx. 80% full capacity. We anticipate full recovery sometime early this afternoon. Historically, Monday's are intense traffic days, and that extra added attention will slow down the recovery a little bit. Thank you for hanging in there with us.Update: (8:30PM EST) Of course we have to have a record day, today of all days, and it has caused the end-end repair of the distribution network to take a little longer. Currently, somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 our users should be back up to 100%. Others will still be experiencing some slow downloads, occasional timeouts, and a few 404's from time to time while the network is healing. Specifically, new uploads are taking longer than usual to get out to the whole system. If you use and outside feed to link to your libsyn media, it may help a little if you upload, then hold back on releasing the file into your feed until it has made it around a little bit. (Especially you big shows) A good check is to hit http://media.libsyn.com/media/username/filename in a webbrowser, and if the node your directed to is not media0, then it should be ok. The higher the number the better (>media20 or >media30). Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 5:38 AM Comments[6] |
Sun, 19 February 2006 As part of our ongoing house-cleaning effort to go back and rework some of the parts of our system which we didn't get quite right the first time around, we've revamped the publishing page to be a little closer to what we had in mind when we set out to make a system that was both easy to use, and extensible to the advanced user. We're not through yet, but we've refined it enough for one day and are going to let everyone start using it right away. We've try to hit on the major ones people have been after us for a while now. If you don't see your need on this list, please be a little patient, but also don't hesitate to bug us again about it.
The new features you'll find are:

Sun, 19 February 2006 Libsyn friends:
We're doing some relatively heavy-duty upgrades this weekend to continue to accommodate the explosive growth we're experiencing. So, while we're going to keep interruptions to an absolute minimum, weird things inevitably pop up. Please bring them to our attention if you catch something extra-wrong. Media delivery should continue uninterrupted. This upgrade is more toward users home directories, blog pages, rss serving, etc. So, anyway, rambling aside, keep your head on a swivel.
Yours,

Sat, 18 February 2006 Hey guys,
Around 5pm eastern there was a glitch in our caching system for rss feeds. The feeds were temporarily unavailable. We did not see a significant drop in traffic, and things are again functioning properly.
Thanks Category: Bugs -- posted at: 8:06 PM Comments[1] |
Fri, 17 February 2006 Two hours worth of file transfers were replayed into the stats db, and some attendant display errors were corrected. At this time, stats should be fully back to normal. If you see anything contraindicators, please let us know.
Also: in the past, when we have had to recover from logs, "phantom" files have occasionally crept into the stats displays of some users. I have added additional checks to attempt to prevent this, but if you see anything of the sort I'll clean it up and make the recovery process smarter for next time. As always, just drop a note to our support email box with a note about anything that doesn't look right. Category: Stats -- posted at: 1:37 AM Comments[0] |
Thu, 16 February 2006 We had a slight problem with our stats database around 12:23:06 this evening. We have not been tracking downloads real-time for the past hour. All data is being logged however, and we will be processing the raw logs as soon as possible.
The real-time tracking will be turned back on shortly and will start recording again. Sorry for the misqueue. We are updating our db tables to prevent this particular issue from happening again. Category: announcements -- posted at: 1:30 AM Comments[2] |
Sun, 12 February 2006 You may notice a new checkbox in your media tab today. An option an overwhelming number of users have asked for, is finally delivered: files that won't get archived.
Sticky files will stay in your current media, and therefore on our fast, primary media delivery network, for as long as you are a libsyn user. Please note, that any space a sticky file consumes will not be available for other files to use. (ie, if you have a 100MB account, and make 20MB file sticky, you will only ever at most have 80MB of space for future uploads) Look for more small modifications and features to spill out over the next few days and weeks. Thu, 9 February 2006 Between 11pm and 5am last night we had an issue with a misconfigured mail service. This was an administrative error that would have caused mail sent to us (at any @libsyn.com address) to be bounced. If you were seeking support during this time, or trying to contact us via e-mail for any reason, please re-send and accept our apologies for the mistake.
Thanks Category: announcements -- posted at: 5:47 AM Comments[0] |
Sun, 5 February 2006 Around 3:00 EST this afternoon we started seeing a surge in traffic. We are moving traffic around and trying to do what we can to up our capacity. We will hopefully have things returned to normal asap. Category: announcements -- posted at: 5:29 PM Comments[0] |
Thu, 26 January 2006 there is now an 'advanced options' section of the post table. This is where we will be putting new fields for everyone to play with. The first is just a big, generic text area where you can put other tags. The problem is you can't put your own custom tags in there yet, because you can't define your own namespaces. I guess that's the next thing to put in there. But in the meantime, you can put creative commons rdf tags in there, Category: Feature -- posted at: 2:47 AM Comments[2] |
Tue, 24 January 2006 Note on spam:
We seemed to have uncovered another access point into our comment system. We are working to patch the newly discovered issue as quickly as possible. Category: Bugs -- posted at: 8:35 PM Comments[2] |
Mon, 23 January 2006 Our replacement switch arrived today and we will be installing tonight. We don't anticipate more than a few moments of disruption, but just wanted to give everyone the heads up. We have to schedule time with the team in the datacenter to ensure the switchover happens at the most opportune time.
Our hopes is that this upgrade will give us more headroom to push even more data.

Sun, 22 January 2006 It's been more then 3 days now since the last spam comment has been placed on a libsyn blog page, so we can hopefully say that the hole the spammers were exploiting has been closed. We are now facing the dilemma of: 'should we go through and try to scrub the system of spam?' What's the line or definition of a spam post- er what if we delete something that's not spam. Is it worth it- or should we leave it up to you to remove your own spam ?'
Please leave a comment (or spam, that'd be awesome) on this forum post letting us know your feelings. Category: announcements -- posted at: 10:23 AM Comments[3] |
Wed, 18 January 2006 We finally have a bit of good news to report about the state of the libsyn delivery network. After a harddrive failure in one of our archive nodes added to our problems, we were able to rebuild the machine with a new harddrive, and in addition bring more nodes online for the archive network. We also moved some of our servers to a temporary switch while we await the replacement for our main one. We hope this keeps up with the daytime rush tomorrow as we have a new bank of media nodes coming online in the new datacenter in the afternoon(fingers crossed).
Probably 99% of the incidents of 404's on file downloads people have been seeing the past several days are directly related to the archive network failures. The steps taken today and those we will hopefully be able to take tomorrow, should clear up all issues pertaining to downloading older files. Mon, 16 January 2006 Another day, and more headaches with our switch. Cisco is dragging their heals with a replacement, and the move-in to the new datacenter is taking longer than we expected or wanted. The aspect of the service most affected is the archives, but during the peak hours, all downloads are suffering. We don't have that much more to relay other than we are working all angles we can right now to bring the download speeds back up and eliminate the timeouts. Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement and patience. Category: announcements -- posted at: 11:35 PM Comments[0] |
Sun, 15 January 2006 We are doing two major upgrades to our Media Delivery Network over the next couple days which should hopefully put us back ahead of the rush for data currently going on in podcasting. There apparently is a physical hardware problem with our data switch, which is being replaced, in our primary data center. In addition, we are bringing new servers online in another new data center. Both these upgrades have been planned for a while- the recent explosion has just moved that timetable up a little bit. Since the beginning of December, our average traffic load has almost doubled. That ramp is much higher than we have seen previously. As always, thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding as we battle through these technical issues. Thu, 12 January 2006 Last night's upgrades prooved to help some, but was not enough of a solution to hold us over until we are able to purchase a new gigabit fiber connection or expand to a second datacenter. We apologize for the lack of communication today, but we pretty literaly were pulling our hair out all day trying to shuffle things around, on the phone with the DC and network providers, and doing everything in our power to keep the speeds up. Part of our build out plans include bringing alot more delivery nodes online in another location, geographically isolated from our current datacenter. We're working the best we can to get to that point asap.
Just to be clear. We were able to add the second port channel to our switch, however there seems to be some configuration or software issue which is preventing us from pushing up over the 1 gbps mark. Our certified network techs are working the issue and we will post when there is something to report Category: announcements -- posted at: 11:59 PM Comments[3] |
Thu, 12 January 2006 we're going to light up some new fiber tonight. Sorry for the last minute update, we just got word that we can go ahead now. Since things are pretty slammed still, we figure sooner better then later. We're hoping for no more than a few moments of downtime, but we're trying to brace for the worst.
More updates soon
updateI'm not stupid enough to claim success at 4am (our lowest traffic time of the day) but things went well with the port upgrade, and while we took the main website down for a couple minutes we took the opportunity to tweak some database settings as well. Again, while it's the lull right now, everything is super smooth and fast. We will keep a close eye monitoring things through tomorrows peak times and see how the new headroom affects the performance. Sorry again for the growing pains... but I think we just spurted up a foot. Category: announcements -- posted at: 4:12 AM Comments[6] |
Wed, 11 January 2006 Yesterday we thought we had fully corrected the problem that was leading to low stats numbers for this past weekend.
We were wrong.
As of 7:45 pm, Wed, Jan 11, we *have* corrected the problem, and confirmed this correction, but still need to recover numbers from apache logs from the period of 8:00 monday morning until we finally got the new loadbalancer recording stats correctly. This recovery operation will take place overnight.

Tue, 10 January 2006 Libsynners have been noticing mounting issues with slow starts, timeouts, and less then awesome download speeds. We have identified one of the causes to be network saturation. We are working with our team in the datacenter to get another gigabit network connection in asap. Is podcasting blowing up in popularity? Well, the answer is in our MRTG graphs. Just 2500 podcasts are saturating a gigabit network connection... crazy. Please hang with us while we upgrade to handle you. Category: announcements -- posted at: 10:28 PM Comments[1] |
Tue, 10 January 2006 Every libsyn users is encouraged to download and read the latest revision of our end-user agreement.
Thanks to the keen eye of a few libsynners, we have consulted further with our legal team and changed some wordings, added some material, and taken a couple things out to further separate what is our property and what is yours.
The short of it- anything you upload is yours and we make no claims on it. That's the way it has always been, just wanted to make sure that's how the lawyers see it in ink.

Mon, 9 January 2006 Here's the truth about what's going on with the stats recently: (believe it or not, i'm going to route it back to a power supply again)
Last week, when we had the power blow out in one of our important load balancer servers, we recovered and then put in a fail-over system which more of less included adding another server to do the mirror of what the load balancer does, and then split the load between the two (which was also meant the improve the performance of 'click .. .. .. .. .. . download'. So, the new box went it, all was well and good, and everything (including stats) seemed to be working fine. Well.. in the truth was, in fact, that the stats weren't making it back to the stats database from the new load balancer. So the bad news is, about 1/2 the hits from the last few days haven't been getting counted into your numbers. The very good news is, we are now much better at recovering from the old logs and can back-fill the missing data. It still takes us a little while to reassemble the millions of file requests, so we appreciate it if you pass it along that everything will be restored, and the as of right now, we are counting correctly. We are really sorry for the past few days, it seems when it rains it pours.. and it sucks.. Thanks for hanging in there with us. Category: Stats -- posted at: 10:37 AM Comments[5] |
Sun, 8 January 2006 Hey everyone, we are isolating issues we are having this morning with a couple of our databases and should have everything back to normal very soon.
THank you for your patience
Update (honest truth of what's going on): We have restored connectivity and everything is working from the users POV. There is still a bug somewhere which we are trying to track down that causes mounting connections to our db servers. The reason we were not alerted to the issues sooner, was that our monitoring application was not properly configured from our previous issues with the power supply. The outcome: We are able to continue to bug fix without impacting any users. Once things are finally normal, we will spend a great deal of time revisiting our entire monitoring approach. As always, thank you for your continued patience and support. Fri, 6 January 2006 ![]() Hello Libsynners, If you've been following this blog, you'll know that since the summer we've been taking steps to add redundancy and robustness to our media delivery network. By robustness we mean the number of downloads the network can sustain at any given time (we currently, by our most conservative estimates, serve around 3.5 million files each week). We have been and contiinue to beef up our infrastructure as the demand for your programs increases. By redundancy we mean that should any single part of our system fail, your files will continue to be served. A few weeks ago we made a big move towards this redundancy, seperating our media delivery network from the main libsyn site. Please let us know if you have any questions about the new linking standard, or any of the recent changes to the libsyn network. Thanks as always for your feedback and support - Your Libsyn Support Team Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 8:09 AM Comments[8] |
Fri, 6 January 2006 We are currently resolving some media node issues which is causing slow responses for media requests and timeouts.
We will have it back shortly. UPDATE: A faulty power supply caused a disruption in part of our delivery system. We redirected around the problem while the power supply was being replaced. Now things are back in full. We will be implementing a redundancy here as well as better monitoring tools to prevent this in the future. We apologize for the inconvenience. Wed, 4 January 2006 Happy 2006 everybody! Boy do we have a year in store for you! While visions of sugarplums where dancing in everyone's head, our elves have been hard at work. The result of months of deep development are ~just~ about to come to fruition. While you all have been building your audiences, the technology has been coming together behind the scenes, and we are now proud to present to you, the libsyn + Kiptronic sponsorship program. We've been working with our friends at Kiptronic since last July to bring libsyn users a program to match up their podcasts with paid sponsorships. We have planned carefully to ensure that the sponsorship program provides a fair and open marketplace. With libsyn, content creators always maintain control of their content. Both publishers and sponsors are able to easily set their own terms and negotiate deals that make sense for them. The program is, of course, 100% optional and won't cost you a dime unless you get paid!
Here's how it works:

Wed, 4 January 2006 Wow, you guys are getting popular! Our servers having been smoking since coming back from the holidays.. must be all those iPods everyone got for christmas.
We are bringing more hardware online to handle the increased load. The biggest problem currently is slow starts for media files. We are going to try some things to fix that as best we can while the new servers are being built and installed.
Thank you everyone for your patience. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 3:50 PM Comments[0] |
Thu, 29 December 2005 Stats have been acting up today. Database problems have caused updates to freeze. We are currently working on the problem and no data has been lost. However, it will take time to restore the data for all the affected users. We'll let you know when things are back 100%.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Category: Stats -- posted at: 1:31 AM Comments[1] |
Fri, 16 December 2005 Around 3pm eastern today, we encountered some propagation issues for newly uploaded files that led to some system instability. We are currently working on the problem. Some users that have recently uploaded files may encounter some 404s as the files make it to the distribution network. We will keep you posted. We apologize for the inconvenience. Things are functioning much better. We'll let you know once its all clear. Category: Media Delivery -- posted at: 4:38 PM Comments[2] |
Sun, 11 December 2005 For those users who currently take our XML or Apache logs, and process them offline, there is a new feature, and slight change to procedure. First off, this currently only affects a small % of libsyn users. This in no way affects the stats tracking, displaying, or eventual dissemination of the LAA (libsyn active audience) and libsyn stats system. For those of you who do take our XML logs, run some scripts you have made on them, and do whatever it is you want to do with them, we now have an updated feature. You can select the libsyn XML format, or standard Apache log format. For new customers, you will have to enable this feature if you want downloadable logs to start building for you. We are creating the logs from the database that updates the flash stats display. We will also very soon have a public (or private) RSS feed for your stats that you will be able to subscribe to. This does not affect that either. For existing customers, if you currently don't use this feature, please do us and everyone else a favor and turn off stat logging. We have, by default, left logging on for ever existing user, but would greatly save disk space and system resources if we only logged for those who absolutely needed it. For more on this subject, please see the forum post Category: announcements -- posted at: 5:08 AM Comments[3] |
Hey everyone, there's been a ton of requests for the option to allow comments to be moderated before going live onto your blog page. We came up with a quick and dirty implementation of such a feature which, like much of the rest of the publishing system, will be improved in the upcoming months as we revise the whole publishing system
