Wed, 22 March 2006 So we got a small flood of emails from users experiencing false "Over Quota" alerts- as they clearly didn't have as much media in their account as we were reporting. The blanket cause of that we had some backups of user directories foating around the system which were still associated to the users and therefore counting against their quotas.
We will get through all the emails and ensure the issues have been solved for everyone, it will just take us a little time.

Wed, 22 March 2006 Hello podcasting world-
Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up on things. I know we said 2 weeks ago that archiving was getting turned back on, and disk quotas were going back into effect. Well, finally, as of tonight, they are. So if you went crazy uploading during the period of no-quota, you're account will be over quota now. Hopefully noone did.
In other news. we have been a little tardy the past few days in responding to emails and to forum posts. We are going to try to make it a general rule of thumb to get through emails before we hit the forums. The time to do both, AND make improvements to the system is so sparse, so in order we'll answer: emails, then forum, then person instant messages. The bigger problem, however, is that our system has bugs and we have poor documentation. The first thing is our constant "to-do" list and we will make improvements with over time. Now that it's spring- we're kicking our house cleaning into high gear. As for the other thing, documentation, here's where we're calling on all of you to help us out a little (if you have some time). Now that it's the 21st century, we have finally put some work into our documentation wiki. http://docs.libsyn.com is now updated a little more (working on it even as we type this email) and we openly welcome all your libsyn zealots to come help us fill in the cracks. Now, we know you all would do it just for your unconditional love of podcasting, but we do have plans to reward the big contributors (that goes for the community forum as well). Everything from sticker, pins, t-shirts, free accounts, marty's car.. will be given as small tokens of our appreciation to those who have continued to give back to the community. Having a good set of documentation will greatly cut down on the number of support emails we currently get. We'll try to emerge a practical compliment between the forum and the wiki so new users (and old) can self diagnose and help themselves understand the common issues of libsyn. Then a quick stop at the http://support.libsyn.com blog for system alerts and issues, and then last resort an email. We hope everyone is enjoying the new hardware that has been put in place over the last couple weeks. Good news coming from the Kiptronic camp as well in terms of new sponsors coming into the marketplace very soon as well as some awesome new features we'll be excited to share with everyone soon. I will take a quick minute to talk about one of those, and that is libsyn stats. As mentioned on our stats display for months now, RSS stat feeds are almost ready to roll. What is also going to happen, is those users who choose to sign up for the kiptronic marketplace will automatically get their libsyn stats fed into the kiptronic system and displayed to potential sponsors. IF YOU ARE NOT USING KIPTRONIC, YOUR STATS WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH THEM. That's very important to note that we will not disclose your information to anyone who you have not given express consent to. The way you authorize the sharing of your audience data with other libsyn partners (soon to come) is through the advanced settings tab. We are also considering releasing podcast rankings to the public for those who wish to opt in. We welcome your feedback on these topics, either via private email or in the public community forum. As always, thank you all for letting us syndicate your content. It is an honor. Thank you for hangin with libsyn, through thick and thin, and helping to build the greatest network of podcasts in the 'verse. (Firefly fans, let me hear ya) Leaving you with a little support podcast that was sent to us recently. Wouldn't it be funny if everyone sent us audio support requests? podcast supportlet me answer that.. . no Comments[3] |
Tue, 21 March 2006 A few people have emailed in and posted on the forum about problems logging in through FTP. We are trying to determine a contributing factor as to why only some accounts are having this problem. A fix for the issue is to login via the web, and under the account tab, change your password. You can "change" it to what it already is, and it will automatically kick the ftp system into recognizing it.

Mon, 13 March 2006 ![]() Because archiving was off for a number of days, we have had to turn it back on again in phases. We've made multiple sweeps of your home directories, archiving files that are 30 days old, and the plan is to make another complete sweep again tonight, re-enable quotas, and then put archiving back on an automated schedule. At least one person has pointed out that a number of files that were archived on Friday were resulting in 404's. This was because of a short archive run that went astray. We believed we had restored all of the missing files, but if we missed one user, it is possible there are more. If you notice 404's on any of your archived files, please let us know right away. Finally, while we are hustling behind the scenes here at libsyn hq, Dave M. has been on the road meeting with various friends in the industry. In this picture, Dave is discussing some funding options with our new financial analyst... stay tuned for more. Category: announcements -- posted at: 1:37 PM Comments[4] |
Sat, 11 March 2006 If you have a new account with libsyn (created within the last 3 weeks or so) there is a possibility that your files will result in a 404 file not found error for a short period this evening. This is a result of more shuffling and shifting (see previous post). The outage should not last more than a matter of minutes, so if you are having persistent problems getting your files (say, longer than 10 minutes), please contact our resident shuffler and shifter, Marty. You can get Marty on skype (martymulligan) or by submitting a support request via email to support@libsyn.com. If you are requesting support related to a new account that is receiving 404's on your files, please put "404" somehwere in the subject line.
Thanks, this is a pre-emptive notice. We don't expect there to be issues with these moves, but in case there are, we wanted you all to have some point of refence to work from.
thanks-
Update (03/12/2006 11:08am EST): Delays on uploaded files should no longer be an issue. If you are experiencing problems with any of your files, please contact us with the info listed above. Category: announcements -- posted at: 11:52 PM Comments[1] |
Mon, 6 March 2006 Some users may have experienced some brief 404 issues on new uploads. We are in the process of shuffling some nodes around. More things dealing with the archives which have started to backup the main media network a bit. We have a grasp on things and should hopefully have a solid solution in place this evening.
The issues with the archives not processing, and new uploads 404-ing are temporary and should be resolved shortly Category: announcements -- posted at: 9:47 PM Comments[2] |
Sun, 5 March 2006 Hey everyone. As many people have noticed, the archiving procedure has been not happening for the past few days. We are working on implementing a temporary fix, which is disk quotas have been disabled. From the Account tab, you will look like you are over quota, but you are not, and uploads will still go through.
We ask that everyone respect the system and not go crazy uploading more then your account allows. Once we finish running the update scripts to archive the files that need to be archived, we will turn the quotas back on. If you have more media uploaded that your account will allow, you will be over quota again.
Again, your account will look like it's over quota and disabled from uploading, however you ARE still able to upload while we fix the archiving situation Thank you and sorry for taking an extra couple days to resolve this problem Category: Bugs -- posted at: 9:09 PM Comments[4] |
Wed, 1 March 2006 For many users today, downloads have been unacceptably slow to start, and speeds have been lower than usual. New uploads may result in a 404 while the file has not propagated through our entire system. Please give it a few minutes on new uploads for the file to get around. If you would like to upload a file without having it added to your RSS feed, you can 'Save as Draft' from the publish page. Then you can check the file from the media tab, and once the file downloads, you can safely go into the previous posts page and check the box to add the episode to your feed. For those that use an external RSS feed/blog, once you upload the file, please just hold off on posting it until the downloads resolve.
This is just a workaround while we get more optimizations and new hardware online. Thank you everyone for your patience and support.Update: The 404 issues due to delayed propagation should be taken care of. Feel free to publish directly and not have to 'Save as Draft' and wait. Wed, 1 March 2006 Over the past 12-18 hours we have seen an increasingly drastic number of requests coming from non-standard user agents. We need to take some measures to react to the activity that is best described as "unfriendly" (ie, thousands of GET requests for the same file). Currently we've started to block: GET requests with blank user agents GET requests from Microsoft BITS/6.6 GET requests from MovableType/3.2 GET requests from MovableType/3.16 GET requests from WXHttp/1.0 GET requests from GI Oct 14 2005 20:54:03 We will be adding to this list until we can re-stabilize and thoroughly understand the root of the wacky (destructive) behavior. To be clear, requests from all browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari, etc) and iTunes will continue to be honored while we are working through this issue As always, thank you for your patience and support. Tue, 28 February 2006 Following last weekends system maintenance, we had disabled the change password and reset password functionality on libsyn.com. As of this posting, the change and reset password functions have been re-enabled, so if you have any trouble loggin into the website or via FTP, please reset your password and try again.
